Description

OPEN DATA is not enough! – People need information, not data!

The diversity of open data rises with increasing digitalization. Administration, economy as well as science facilities and culture facilities provides open data, which should create to citizens more transparency and allow it to enterprises to develop new commercial models.

But are the citizens and companies also able to assess these data to gain the necessary information which they need to answer their questions?

Up to now these Data are only in a minority of cases so standardized that they automatic validated and exchanged and can be faultless interpreted by computer programs.

This fact prevents currently her wide economic utilisation as the effort of necessary elimination of errors, structure analyses and updates brings the potential economic use to naught.

The challenge consists above all in making Europe-wide comparable information from open data with heterogeneous country-specific structures and content.

GEOdemos is a mobile application, that uses heterogeneous data and services on the basis of international networked infrastructures and that gives the cosmopolitan a strong tool to use this data and services.

The aim is to make it possible for the user to assess the living and housing quality of different places in Europe with the help of well-chosen aspects. According to formulation of a question GEOdemos presents the data differently in thematic maps or exportable location-based reports.

Currently, however, the needed data are not available in the necessary quality and not in a comparable form. Therefore, some of these files are not directly integrated in the application via web services, but must be preprocessed first.

For that we subject the data to a quality assurance, describe their structures in a standardized machine-readable form, find out not publicly revealed continuations in the data offering, update the data and make them available on our servers.

For creating this special information needs we use besides standards-based information services like Web-Services and INSPIRE also the heterogeneous information services of the Open Data Initiative as well as varied additional information about locations of private and public data providers distributed in the net.

Concretely, we realize this by accessing on the infrastructure about the Virtual Hubs which developed within the ENERGIC-OD project.
